Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be gradually pervading every aspect of our lives, and social media platforms are no exception. In line with this trend, TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms, is reportedly in the process of adding an AI chatbot to its interface.

Named ‘Tako’, the chatbot is currently being tested in select markets in the Philippines, as per Reuters. Tako aims to engage in discussions with users about various TikToks while simultaneously aiding them in uncovering more engaging content. The bot has been integrated into the main TikTok video interface, residing above the user’s profile picture on the screen’s right-hand side. It is visually represented by a ghost-shaped icon.

In an interaction with TechCrunch, TikTok’s spokesperson expressed the platform’s commitment to remaining at the cutting edge of innovation to ensure an enhanced user experience. They said, “In select markets, we’re testing new ways to power search and discovery on TikTok, and we look forward to learning from our community as we continue to create a safe place that entertains, inspires creativity and drives culture.”

The introduction of Tako appears to be a fresh initiative from TikTok to provide users with an alternative method of app navigation. This chatbot combines the features of TikTok’s search function with its sophisticated recommendation algorithm, famously known for its uncanny accuracy in tailoring the ‘For You’ page. According to Watchful, Tako will accumulate user preferences to suggest personalized content that precisely aligns with individual tastes.

Interestingly, TikTok isn’t the only social media platform exploring AI chatbots. Snapchat has also ventured into this realm, unveiling an AI chatbot called ‘MyAI’ in February. Initially, this feature was only available to users subscribing to Snapchat Plus at $3.99. However, the company expanded access to all app users in April, reflecting the growing importance of AI-enhanced user experiences across social media platforms.
