Amazon has rolled out a new service called ‘RxPass’, a monthly prescription subscription plan for Prime members in the US. RxPass will cost people a monthly flat fee of $5 (on top of the Prime membership fee) to get free delivery of as many generic medications that treat more than 80 common health conditions. The subscription plan will provide medication treating ailments such as hypertension, allergies, and even hair-growth pills. RxPass is not available to people on government medical plans like Medicare or Medicaid.

The new service under Amazon Pharmacy comes at a time when the e-commerce giant Amazon is focusing on its healthcare portfolio, which over time, has included telehealth, drug delivery, fitness trackers, and cancer research. The company launched Amazon Pharmacy in 2020, after acquiring online pharmacy PillPack in 2018 and primary care tech platform OneMedical for $3.9 billion in 2022.

In its announcement, Amazon said that 150 million Americans intake one or more of the medications available through the RxPass monthly subscription. ” RxPass is our latest effort to help patients save time, save money, and stay healthy. It’s available now to customers in most U.S. states,” the company said in its blog.

In a statement Tuesday, Dr. Vin Gupta, Amazon Pharmacy Chief Medical Officer explained an oft-cited statistic that inspired the new strategy, saying, “New medications don’t get filled, refills don’t get picked up.”

To enable the service, users can visit the Amazon Pharmacy website or directly use the app.  Amazon pharmacists or support staff are on hand 24/7, and available to discuss medications if any advice is required. Users can also cancel the service if the customer’s prescription medication needs to change.
