Instagram’s new Quiet mode: Use it when you want to stay away from the platform

While 'Quiet mode' is available to all users, it is primarily focused on teens' usage of Instagram.

Meta-owned Instagram has launched a new feature called ‘Quiet mode‘ to allow its users to set healthy boundaries with their virtual lives. Once the new feature is enabled, the user’s profile’s activity status will change to ‘In Quiet mode’, which will be visible to followers if they open the user’s profile. Quiet mode will also enable users to turn off notifications and send an auto-reply to people sending direct messages (DM) to them.

While the feature is available to all users, it is primarily focused on teens’ usage of the app. “Teens have told us that they sometimes want to take time for themselves and might be looking for more ways to focus at night, while studying and during school. You can easily customize your Quiet mode hours to fit your schedule and once the feature is turned off, we’ll show you a quick summary of notifications so you can catch up on what you missed,” Instagram says in its blog post.

As of now, Quiet mode is only available in the US, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Instagram says it will soon introduce the feature in more countries.

Here’s how you can enable the ‘Quite mode’

– Open the Instagram app and tap on the profile icon- Tap on three horizontal bars at the top right corner of the screen

– Now, select Settings and tap on Notifications

– Turn on the toggle to enable Quiet mode

-Select the duration you want to pause the notification

Other than this, users can also control their recommendations. Instagram says that if a user selects ‘not interested’ on a post seen in explore tab, the platform will avoid showing similar content in Reels and searches. Users will now also have an option can add words, emojis, and hashtags they may want to avoid in feeds.
