In an era where foldable or rollable display technology is gaining popularity, especially in the smartphone segment, LG has taken a step forward and unveiled first of its kind 12-inch high-resolution stretchable display. The screen is equipped with “free-form technology” which aids in its expansion without any damage and is claimed to surpass the existing foldable/rollable technology.

“The company’s newly unveiled Stretchable display is the industry’s first to achieve 20 percent stretchability, a resolution of 100ppi, and full-color RGB. In addition, its high flexibility, durability, and reliability maximize its potential for commercialization,” the Seoul-based multinational electronics manufacturer said.

LG says the stretchable display can be used in various industries like fashion, wearables, mobility, and gaming.

The 12-inch panel is made of special silicon used in contact lenses, and it can be stretched up to 14 inches. Additionally, the screen uses a micro-LED light source with a pixel pitch of less than 40μm. This helps to secure a high level of durability and a resolution that competes with most existing monitors. The stretchable display is wired with a flexible S-form spring that enables the panel to endure repetitive changes to its form.

The thin, lightweight display can potentially be used in various industries including fashion, wearables, mobility, and gaming due to its ability to easily attach to curved surfaces like skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles, and aircraft. The stretchable display is a result of a large-scale research and development project the company was selected to lead by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy in 2020, LG Display said.
