Microsoft unveils Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5 at annual event: key highlights

Microsoft launched a series of devices at its annual Surface Event 2022 on Wednesday. Here are some important highlights at the American multinational tech giant’s hardware event:


Surface Pro 9

Surface Pro 9 comes in two variants: Intel’s 12th Gen Core processors and Microsoft SQ 3 5G processor co-created in partnership with Qualcomm. The company claims up to 15.5 hours of battery life for Surface Pro 9 with Intel, while the SQ 3/5G variant is expected to run for up to 19 hours. Both have Windows 11. The touchscreen, a 13-inches lightweight tablet can also be used as a laptop and is perfect for productivity and local gaming. Users can sign, sketch, or navigate with Surface Slim Pen 2, which has integrated storage and wireless charging in the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard.


The Intel processor-powered variant comes with 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB RAM options, and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage. The Microsoft SQ3 variant comes with 8GB and 16GB RAM options, and 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. the device is priced at $999. Pre-orders have begun and the device will be available starting October 25. However, its Indian availability has not been announced yet.


Surface Laptop 5

Sleek, thin, and lightweight are some of the adjectives used for the Surface Laptop 5, which is claimed to have all-day battery life. It is powered by 12th Gen Intel built on the Evo platform with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB LPDDR5x RAM options and up to 1TB storage. The laptop comes in two sizes: 13.5 inches and 15 inches variants, both of which support Dolby Vision IQ, 10-point multi-touch, Surface Pen, and Windows 11.


The smaller variant of Surface Laptop 5 variant comes in four color options: Platinum, Matte Black, Sage, and Sandstone, while Surface Laptop 5 15 inches comes in two colors: Platinum and Matte Black. The device starts at $999 (about Rs 82,000) and will be available on October 25.


Surface Studio 2+

Microsoft unveiled the first Surface Studio in 2016. The new Surface Studio 2+ comes with a large and vibrant 28-inch 3:2 touchscreen display and has Intel 11th Gen Core i7-11370H processor., with up to 50% faster CPU performance. Touted as an all-in-one device, Surface Studio 2+ has NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 discrete GPU to double the graphics performance.


“We’ve enhanced and modernized the display, cameras, Studio Mics, and ports – including USB-C with Thunderbolt 4. With Windows 11, Surface Studio 2+ also meets Secured-core PC standards,” Microsoft said in a blog. The device has 32GB DDR4 RAM and 1TB internal storage and is bundled with the Surface Pen, Surface Keyboard, and Surface Mouse with the purchase. It is priced at $4,499 (approximately Rs 3,70,000) and will be available starting October 25.

Microsoft claims that with its Audio Dock, which features four different ports (HDMI, USB-A, and two USB-C) and a power pass-through to charge the PC, users can reduce desktop clutter while upgrading their audio for meetings, music, and more. “Built-in Omnisonic speakers deliver premium sound, and with dual forward-facing, noise-reducing microphones and integrated mute control, you’ll hear and be heard clearly in your next online meeting,” the tech giant said in a blog.


In terms of compatibility, Microsoft Audio Dock is compatible with Windows 11 Home/Pro, Windows 10, and macOS Operating System and also with Conference Software including Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet. Further specifications include a 20W speaker and a 5W subwoofer. It comes in one Matte Black color option with a one-year limited warranty and is priced at $249.99 (around Rs 20,600).
