OpenAI introduces turning off chat history, other features on ChatGPT
Users can enable the ChatGPT chat history at any time.

OpenAI, an American artificial intelligence company and parent of popular chatbot ChatGPT, on Tuesday rolled out new ways to manage users’ data on the AI platform. With the new update, users can now turn off their chat history, and more.

The San Francisco-based startup said in a blog that ChatGPT will not use the conversations to train and improve its models when chat history is disabled. Additionally, conversation history will not appear in the history sidebar. The update can be found in the AI chatbot’s settings and users can change it at any time.

Additionally, when the chat history is disabled on the chatbot, the company will retain new conversations for 30 days and review them only when needed to monitor for abuse, before permanently deleting them. The company has been rolling out the feature to all users starting yesterday. An employee calls this feature of disabling history an “incognito mode,” according to a Reuters report.

OpenAI’s chief technology officer Mira Murati denied that the updates arise following Italy’s ban on ChatGPT, the report added. She regarded the move as a months-long effort to put users “in the driver’s seat” regarding data collection and added that the company will be working more and more on prioritizing user privacy.

Last month, Italy temporarily banned ChatGPT due to privacy concerns. Spain and France also joined the growing list of countries that are investigating the impact of AI platforms. Earlier this week, a European consumer protection organization BEUC, which is short for Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs, urged the EU consumer protection authorities to investigate AI technologies like ChatGPT and their potential harm.

Short for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, ChatGPT is a popular AI text generator and has been the center of attention since its launch in November due to its human-like response. OpenAI, the parent of the AI-based text generator, has a “multimillion-dollar investment” by American tech major Microsoft.

OpenAI hopes that the latest update “provides an easier way to manage your data than our existing opt-out process,” the company said; adding that it is also working on a new “ChatGPT Business” subscription for professionals with additional data controls and this feature is expected to be available in the coming months.

“We are also working on a new ChatGPT Business subscription for professionals who need more control over their data as well as enterprises seeking to manage their end users. ChatGPT Business will follow our API’s data usage policies, which means that end users’ data won’t be used to train our models by default,” OpenAI said.

The AI company also introduced a new “Export” option in ChatGPT’s settings which will let users easily export their data and understand what information the chatbot stores. Users will receive a file with their conversations and all other relevant data in an email.
