AI systems like ChatGPT to be on agenda for G7 Summit next month: Report
G7 Summit is an annual meeting of advanced economies including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Leaders of the Group of Seven, or G7, nations will discuss artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT at their meeting next month, Tokyo’s Kyodo News reported. G7 Summit is scheduled for May 19-21 in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima.

In another meeting of G7 ministers later this month, Kyodo said that dignitaries would call for accelerated research into generative AI systems and aim to formulate an action plan for its governance.

“International rules need to be created,” Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said to regional newspapers and as seen on Reuters. Kishida’s comments came as several authorities across the globe are learning and investigating the potential impact of large language model-based AI platforms.

Short for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, ChatGPT is a popular AI text generator and has been a center of attention for many due to its human-like response. OpenAI, the parent of the AI-based text generator, has a “multimillion-dollar investment” by American tech major Microsoft. Other tech giants like Google and Baidu are also joining the AI race to emulate the success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

However, plagiarism and false information concerns have led to a ban on chatbot usage from several educational institutes like Sciences Po, one of the top universities in France. Last month, some users complained of a bug on the ChatGPT that let users see the chat titles of other users. Although the company later announced it has fixed the bug, the problem cost the company in a manner that its AI chatbot got temporarily banned from Italy last month.

The Italian authorities further said that the OpenAI chatbot lacks a sound legal framework for gathering personal information from users, which the system uses to train its algorithms. This prompted several other authorities across the globe to investigate the impact and potential damage that such AI platforms could cause. Around the same time, Tesla chief Elon Musk along with a group of AI experts called all AI labs to immediately pause the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months.

Meanwhile, G7 Summit is an annual meeting of leaders from seven advanced countries that account for a significant portion of the world’s economy and have a major impact on global affairs. It is hosted by one of the seven member countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Global issues like economic growth, security, climate change, development, and more are discussed at the G7 summit.
