Apple likely to unveil its mixed reality headset this year, report says

Apple has roped in resources from several other departments to launch its ambitious MR headset this year.

American consumer tech major Apple will likely unveil its much-awaited mixed reality headset this year, according to a Bloomberg report. The device could be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, the report added.

The iPhone maker could reportedly name the MR headset ‘Reality Pro’ and the new operating system for the device could be called xrOS. The company has already shared the MR device with a small number of high-profile software developers for testing, letting them get started on third-party apps, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported.

According to another report by The Information, Apple’s hot new product is expected to look like a pair of ski goggles and will use several cameras to let users experience both augmented and virtual reality. Among several other interesting features, the headset could also get a physical dial that would let wearers switch between the real and virtual worlds.

It would be interesting to see if Apple’s MR headset could compete with Meta’s high-end virtual and mixed reality headset – Quest Pro which was launched for $1500, whoopingly pricier than Quest 2 by almost three times, in October last year. Meta claims that the headset is the first-ever device powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ platform and comes with 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, and 10 high-res sensors for enhanced immersive experiences. Meta Quest Pro is the slimmest and most balanced VR device the American multinational tech giant has made so far.

Back to Gurman’s report, that further pointed out that Apple has roped in resources from several other departments to launch its ambitious MR headset this year. This could hamper other projects, and the company could not have a lot of surprises for its customers other than the MR headset this year.
