In a groundbreaking development, Chinese firm Weichai Power has unveiled the world’s first diesel engine with an astounding thermal efficiency of 53.09 percent. This remarkable achievement was showcased at the 2024 World Congress on Internal Combustion Engines in Tianjin, China, and was verified by internationally respected testing organizations, TÜV SÜD and the China Automotive Technology & Research Center.

A Milestone 127 Years in the Making

The significance of this milestone cannot be overstated. Since the invention of the diesel internal combustion engine 127 years ago, engineers and scientists have been striving to improve its thermal efficiency, which is the percentage of diesel combustion energy converted into useful engine output work without the need for a waste heat recovery mechanism. A higher base engine thermal efficiency directly translates to improved engine economy.

Weichai Power’s Journey of Innovation

Weichai Power’s journey towards this achievement has been marked by consistent innovation. In September 2020, the company set a new record with a diesel engine boasting a thermal efficiency of 50.23 percent. They further improved upon this in January 2022, reaching 51.09 percent, and then again in November 2022, achieving 52.28 percent thermal efficiency. These figures are particularly impressive when compared to the average thermal efficiency of 46 percent for diesel engines currently on the market.

The Science Behind the Breakthrough

To reach the unprecedented 53.09 percent thermal efficiency, Weichai Power’s research team dedicated over 500 days to optimizing four crucial systems: fuel supply, air intake, combustion, and friction reduction. By advancing technologies such as high-expansion combustion, mixed-flow pressurization, high-efficiency fuel injection, and low-resistance friction reduction, the team made incremental improvements of 0.1 percent at a time, ultimately leading to this historic breakthrough. During the research and development phase, the group received an impressive 176 invention patents and 68 utility model patents.

Far-Reaching Implications

The implications of this technology are far-reaching. Upgrading from a thermal efficiency level of 45-46 percent to 53 percent can increase a diesel engine’s economy by approximately 14 percent. In China alone, this innovation could lead to annual fuel savings of about 31 million tons and a reduction in carbon emissions of 97 million tons. For a heavy-duty tractor with an annual mileage of 155,342 miles (250,000 kilometers), this technology can save around 12,000 gallons of diesel fuel, resulting in an annual savings of nearly $13,529 (98,000 yuan) for the owner, based on the current market price of diesel fuel.
