ASUS upgrades handheld gaming with ROG Ally X: Specs, price and more

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) has unveiled the ROG Ally X, an upgrade to its popular handheld gaming console – the ROG Ally. The ROG Ally X retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor but boasts improvements in storage, RAM, battery life, ergonomics, cooling, and connectivity.

Built for Gamers on the Go

The ROG Ally X features a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protected 7” FHD display with 500 nits of brightness and refresh rate of upto 120 Hz. The device runs Windows 11, allowing players to access a vast library of PC games. While the processor remains unchanged, key internal components receive a substantial boost. Storage doubles to a whopping 1TB, thanks to an M.2 2280 slot that lets users add even larger drives. Gamers will also appreciate the leap to 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM, ensuring smooth performance for demanding titles.

Addressing a major user request, ASUS equips the ROG Ally X with a massive 80Wh battery, doubling the capacity of the original Ally. This translates to longer gaming sessions without needing to be tethered to a wall outlet. Despite the larger battery, the weight increase is minimal. The latest ASUS ROG Ally X weighs 678 g, while its predecessor weighs 608 g.

    Enhanced Controls and Connectivity

The ROG Ally X features a redesigned chassis for improved ergonomics. The grips are slightly deeper and more rounded, while the buttons and joysticks are arranged for better comfort. The D-pad has also been upgraded for more precise control in fighting and retro games.

In response to user feedback, ASUS replaces the original XG Mobile port with two USB-C ports. One of these ports is Thunderbolt compatible, offering greater flexibility for connecting external displays or GPUs.

Improved Cooling for Long Gaming Sessions

The ROG Ally X implements a new thermal solution to accommodate the powerful components and larger battery. Despite featuring smaller fans with thinner blades, this design is said to provide 24% more airflow. Additionally, a third exhaust vent keeps the device cooler, not only the internal components but also the touchscreen, which stays up to 6°C cooler for extended use.

ROG Ally X Pricing and Availability

The ROG Ally X is currently available for pre-order in Taiwan for around 25,999 TWD (approximately Rs 66,827), according to a report by Indian Express. Asus has not yet announced international availability or pricing.
