The CEOs of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic are scheduled to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris and other high-ranking Biden administration officials on Thursday to discuss pressing artificial intelligence (AI) issues, according to a Reuters report. The meeting emphasizes President Joe Biden’s expectations that technology companies prioritize the safety of their products before making them available to the public.
As AI technology continues to grow rapidly, concerns such as privacy violations, bias, and the potential proliferation of scams and misinformation have surfaced. In April, President Biden acknowledged the potential danger of AI, stating, “Social media has already demonstrated the harm that powerful technologies can do without the right safeguards.” He emphasized that technology companies have a responsibility to ensure their products are safe.
The administration has actively sought public comments on proposed accountability measures for AI systems in response to growing concerns about AI’s impact on national security and education. Recently, deputies from the White House Domestic Policy Council and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy highlighted the serious risks that AI can pose to workers in a blog post.
The Thursday meeting will include senior officials from the Biden administration, such as Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. The companies involved have not yet commented on the upcoming meeting.
The ChatGPT AI program has specifically caught the attention of U.S. lawmakers due to its rapid growth and ability to provide quick answers to a wide range of queries.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his concerns about AI during a television interview last month, stating, “I think we should be cautious with AI, and I think there should be some government oversight because it is a danger to the public.” As AI technology continues to develop and expand, it appears that the push for increased government oversight and regulation is gaining momentum.
