Constructed in the heart of the Dutch capital, Matrix One is designed as an expansive office and laboratory complex. Its groundbreaking design stems from a holistic approach to sustainability, embracing principles of reusability and flexibility. Being the largest of the seven buildings in the Matrix Innovation Center, Matrix One sets a revolutionary stage for scientists and entrepreneurs to collaborate on various sustainable initiatives.
Stretching across six floors, the building boasts a massive interior expanse of 140,000 square feet. It hosts several leading tech and sustainability firms, including Qualcomm, Photanol, and Skytree. Its unique architectural features, such as the “social staircase” with cozy seating areas and the spacious central atrium with extensive natural lighting, ensure a lively and inviting environment. Additionally, the building houses a restaurant, bar, and an auditorium that can accommodate up to 100 people.
Designed by renowned architects MVRDV, Matrix One stands out for its remarkable adaptability. Its construction facilitates easy disassembly and remodeling, thanks to the accessible fastening screws and bolts and exposed air ducts. An online database meticulously records the building’s 120,000 components, paving the way for future reuse or remodeling.
As MVRDV partner Frans de Witte points out, Matrix One epitomizes an innovative approach towards tackling carbon reduction. The building’s design acknowledges the evolving nature of state-of-the-art technology and accommodates future changes with ease.
The sustainable strategies adopted by Matrix One are not limited to its structure alone. A significant solar panel array spanning 10,700 square feet adorns its roof, substantially reducing its reliance on grid electricity. To further enhance energy efficiency, the building employs natural lighting and ventilation, along with close monitoring of power consumption.
Other notable sustainable features of the building include a rainwater retention tank and an interior design that encourages the use of stairs over elevators. The building also promotes cycling by providing a dedicated bicycle parking facility. As a testament to its comprehensive sustainability approach, Matrix One has proudly earned the BREAAM-Excellent green building certification.
