Meta Enters VR Subscription Market with Meta Quest+ Offering Access to Curated VR Titles

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has unveiled its latest offering in the virtual reality (VR) space with the introduction of Meta Quest+. This subscription service will provide Meta Quest headset users can access two new VR games each month. Priced at $7.99 per month or $59.99 annually, Meta Quest+ aims to offer users an affordable and curated VR gaming experience.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder, and CEO of Meta, confirmed the launch of Meta Quest+ and stated that the service is currently available for Quest 2 and Quest Pro users. Additionally, support for the upcoming Quest 3 headset, set to be released later this year, will also be provided.

The initial lineup of games offered through Meta Quest+ includes the action-rhythm game FPS Pistol Whip and the arcade adventure game Pixel Ripped 1995. In August, subscribers will gain access to the games Walkabout Mini Golf and Mothergunship: Forge. Notably, users will retain access to all the titles as long as their Meta Quest+ subscription remains active.

Meta’s subscription service sets itself apart from competitors like PlayStation, which does not currently offer VR games through its PlayStation Plus subscription.

In their announcement, Meta expressed enthusiasm for the value and convenience that subscription services offer, stating, “And at a monthly value of up to $60 USD, Meta Quest+ combines affordability with the convenience of a curated experience. We’re excited to give gamers on Meta Quest a new way to explore all their headsets have to offer.”

To further entice users, Meta is offering an introductory discount, allowing users who sign up between now and July 31 to pay only $1 for the first month of their Meta Quest+ subscription.

In addition to the subscription service, Meta has also recently revealed upcoming games for its VR headset, including Stranger Things VR, Assassin’s Creed, and Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord.

The introduction of Meta Quest+ reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to generate recurring revenue from its Reality Labs unit, which focuses on the development of VR and augmented reality (AR) technologies. Despite recording an operating loss of $3.99 billion in the first quarter of this year, Reality Labs generated $339 million in revenue. Meta’s shares closed down 3.5 per cent following the announcement of the new VR subscription service.
