Japanese multinational video game company Nintendo finally confirmed what fans have been speculating for years: a new console is coming to succeed the hugely popular Nintendo Switch. In a surprise announcement, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that details about the next-generation Switch will be unveiled “within this fiscal year,” which ends on March 31, 2025. This will be second gaming console in the Switch lineup.
“It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015,” wrote Furukawa on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.”
While details about the new console are still under wraps, rumors suggest it could feature a larger, higher-resolution screen, improved processing power, and continued backwards compatibility with existing Switch games and controllers.
Although many anticipated the announcement during an upcoming Nintendo Direct presentation, Furukawa clarified that details about the Switch successor will not be revealed there. This means fans will likely have to wait until early next year for the official unveiling.
“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation,” Furukawa added.

Meanwhile, the news comes alongside Nintendo’s financial report, indicating a projected slowdown in Switch sales compared to its peak years. However, the Switch remains a powerhouse, boasting over 141 million units sold and a dedicated player base.
Despite being on the market for quite some time, Switch continues to receive strong support from developers who are actively releasing new titles. The gaming device offers a unique gaming experience, allowing players to use it both as a handheld device and a home console when docked, contributing to its widespread popularity among gamers of all ages.
