OpenAI’s ChatGPT app has achieved a milestone by amassing over 500,000 downloads in a mere six days since its launch. Initially limited to iOS and iPad users in the United States, the app has experienced rapid growth and garnered significant attention from users worldwide. This success places ChatGPT among the highest-performing apps of 2022 and 2023, with its popularity rivaling that of the Truth Social app, launched by former US President Donald Trump in February 2022, according to data.ai.
While the language model was initially accessible exclusively on the official OpenAI website, numerous third-party apps claiming to connect users to ChatGPT emerged on the App Store and Google Play Store. Responding to the growing demand, OpenAI fulfilled its promise to release the official ChatGPT app for iOS and iPad users in the US. Moreover, OpenAI has recently announced the expansion of the app’s availability to 11 additional countries, including Albania, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Brazil, South Korea, New Zealand, the UK, Nigeria, and Nicaragua. This indicates the potential for even greater success once the app becomes available on Android devices.
Users with a ChatGPT Plus subscription can now utilize OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4, on their iPhones, unlocking a host of enhanced features such as plugin support, instant replies, and the elimination of wait times. Additionally, iOS and iPad users will be able to engage with ChatGPT through voice-based queries.
ChatGPT’s growing user base worldwide positions it as a potential competitor to established search engines like Google in the future. The viral chatbot achieved a remarkable feat in January this year by reaching 100 million daily active users. Notably, ChatGPT achieved this milestone within just two months of its public release, surpassing the time taken by popular apps such as TikTok and Instagram to achieve the same level of user engagement.
It is worth mentioning that amidst ChatGPT’s success, several similar apps have emerged, capitalizing on the hype and intensifying competition within the industry. Unfortunately, many of these apps were fraudulent, imitating ChatGPT’s name or adopting similar branding. While most of these fake apps were easily recognizable, some managed to deceive millions of users and exploit them through expensive subscription plans.
In terms of competition, ChatGPT has outperformed Microsoft’s Bing and Edge in terms of iOS device installations, which is expected considering all three platforms are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 program. However, it is crucial to note that Bing and Edge serve distinct industries, and ChatGPT’s success benefits them as well.
Analyzing the installation numbers across Android and iOS, Bing and Edge garnered a total of 340,000 and 350,000 installations, respectively, during their top-performing five days in February. The only app that surpassed these numbers was “Chat With Ask AI,” which acquired an impressive 590,000 installs from April 4 to 8, 2023.
