Following Microsoft’s footsteps, Opera adding ChatGPT to its browser

Opera is integrating a ChatGPT-powered tool into its PC and mobile web browser. The tool — Shorten– will be added to the browser’s sidebar to generate brief summaries of web pages and articles. The move is part of Opera’s broader plans to integrate AI tools into its browser, following Microsoft’s recent addition to its browser, Edge.

Opera says the upcoming integration aims to give users direct access to the internet’s most in-demand platforms, such as TikTok, Telegram, and WhatsApp. Along with this, the company is working on AI-powered features that will augment the browsing experience with new features that will interact with new generative AI-powered capabilities.

“In more than 25 years of our company’s history, we have always been at the forefront of browser innovation. Whether inventing browser tabs or providing our users with built-in access to generative AI tools, we always push the limits of what’s possible on the web,” said Song Lin, Co-CEO of Opera. “Following the mass interest in generative AI tools, we believe it’s now time for browsers to step up and become the gateway to an AI-powered web”.

The company also presented a demo video that shows users can activate the feature by selecting the “shorten” button to the right of the address bar. A ChatGPT-powered sidebar will pop out from the left, providing a summary of the article or webpage.

The announcement came just days after Microsoft unveiled a revamped version of its search engine Bing, powered by ChatGPT, and also launched new AI features for its Edge browser. After integrating the technology used by OpenAI’s chatbot, the company’s search engine and browser will be able to provide more tailored, detailed, and contextual responses to queries.

“Shorten” is yet not available to everyone. As per reports, Opera will launch the feature to browsers very soon.
