Samsung has joined hands with Google and Qualcomm to build a new mixed-reality platform. The announcement was made at Samsung’s Unpacked event on Wednesday where executives from all three companies came together on stage to talk about their new collaboration. Samsung’s TM Roh, Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon, and Google’s Hiroshi Lockheimer revealed news about their upcoming project.
“We are working to create a new era of highly immersive digital experiences that blur the line between our physical and digital worlds. With our Snapdragon XR tech, Samsung’s amazing products, and Google experiences we have the foundation to make this opportunity a reality,” Amon said onstage.
The companies did not reveal any information or timeline for the upcoming product.
The announcement about this mixed-reality project comes at a time when Meta is investing billions in the metaverse, and Apple is silently working to introduce its mixed-reality headset soon. Last year, Meta launched its Quest Pro headset. Meanwhile, reportedly, Apple might soon launch a mixed-reality headset.
Samsung has already tried its hands on VR headsets with Oculus. A few years ago, the company introduced the Gear VR moniker, however, it was discontinued in 2019. On the other hand, Google also had similar projects including the Daydream VR project and Project Tango. Whereas, Qualcomm has already supplied chips to several headset makers including Meta.
