Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Friday that the platform will soon start compensating verified content creators for ads placed in their replies. The initial payment block is estimated at around $5 million (roughly Rs. 41 crores). Musk took over Twitter in October 2022.
In a tweet, Musk clarified that only verified users would be eligible for serving and earning from these ads. “Note, the creator must be verified and only ads served to verified users count,” Musk said in a tweet.
Under Musk’s ownership, Twitter has faced challenges in retaining advertisers due to concerns over ad placement after the company underwent significant layoffs.
This move coincides with the appointment of Twitter’s newly named CEO, Linda Yaccarino, an advertising veteran from NBCUniversal. Yaccarino’s expertise in the advertising industry may play a crucial role in revitalizing Twitter’s relationship with marketers and improving the overall ad experience.
In March, Musk had previously discussed Twitter’s potential to generate revenue from advertisements that are more relevant and timely. He mentioned that the platform currently earns around 5 or 6 cents per hour of user attention and expressed the possibility of raising that figure to 15 cents or higher with improved ad strategies.
As the tech industry continues to grapple with the evolving landscape of digital advertising, Twitter’s decision to compensate verified content creators for ads in replies reflects its commitment to engaging and rewarding its user base, while also addressing concerns regarding ad placement and content relevance.
