With the latest feature, WhatsApp intends to let users correct their typing errors.
Do you make a lot of typos while sending a text on WhatsApp? Well, the company has now started rolling out a new feature that will let users edit their messages even after they are sent. Users will have a 15-minute window to edit the sent WhatsApp message, the Meta-owned company said on Monday.
“From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats,” WhatsApp said in a blog. To edit the sent message on the platform, users first need to long-press on the sent message and then choose the ‘Edit’ option from the menu for up to fifteen minutes after.
The receiver will be aware of the edited message as the edited text will display “edited” alongside them. However, the Will Cathcart-led company will not show the edit history to the receiver. This is similar to the message delete option on the social media platform where when users delete their WhatsApp message the receiver can see that the message has been deleted but they cannot access the content of the eliminated text.
“As with all personal messages, media and calls, your messages and the edits you make are protected by end-to-end encryption,” the Instant messaging platform said; adding that it has started a global rollout of the feature and it will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.
Last week, reports by WABetaInfo highlighted that the company has enabled the text editing feature to some beta testers and it is compatible with WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.23.10.13 and WhatsApp Beta for iOS version 23.10.0.70. The reports noted that there are no limits on the number of times a message can be edited and that the message cannot be edited from a different device.
The reports added that the company kept a 15-minute window, and not a longer time limit, as the messaging platform intends to let users correct their typing errors and not compromise the integrity of the conversation. “For the moments when you make a mistake, or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages,” WhatsApp said in the blog. It is noteworthy that the company’s rivals Telegram and Signal have been long offering the edit feature for sent texts.
