Foxconn’s iPhone plant in China’s Zhengzhou city is back to almost full production despite a resurgence in Covid cases in the country, media reports suggested. According to Reuters, the iPhone city’s shipment in December reached about 90% of the anticipated peak capacity.
Production at the world’s largest iPhone plant was affected due to the tumult at the Zhengzhou complex where workers protested against the delay in bonuses, food shortages, and poor living conditions caused by the stringent Covid restrictions in the country. Due to the unrest, the American consumer tech giant Apple could at one point stand to lose close to six million iPhone Pro models, Bloomberg reported.
Foxconn later started new hires with the help of the government and offered lucrative bonuses to old employees to attract them to come back to work. While reports suggest that production at the Zhengzhou-based factory has “almost fully resumed,” Foxconn has not given any official comment yet.
Local Chinese media outlet Henan Daily reported that the Foxconn plant, which can accommodate as many as 300,000 workers, is roughly operating with 200,000 staff currently. This, in turn, has further stabilized the company’s supply chain, enabling production capacity to recover just in time for the Lunar New Year shopping season that starts in late January in Asia’s largest economy.
However, the company officials are looking out and staying cautious of any possible disruption in production if Covid cases peak before or after the holiday season, media reports suggested.
