Google Meet reportedly working to launch ‘On-the-Go’ mode

Google Meet would automatically detect when the user is moving and enable the new mode.

Google Meet is reportedly working on a new feature called ‘On-the-Go’ for video calls. As the name suggests the mode is designed for walking meetings and will help users to attend video calls outside, without distractions.

According to a report by 9to5Google, there will be two ways to switch to On-the-Go mode. First, using the smartphone’s sensors, the platform will automatically detect when the user is walking and prompt to switch to On-the-Go mode. Users can otherwise switch to the travel-friendly mode manually through a new option in the in-call menu.

When the new feature is turned on, the platform will disable the user’s camera in the call and stop streaming video from other participants. Furthermore, a new layout will reportedly appear when On-the-Go mode is active that will display “only a handful of large, easily-pressed buttons for Mute, Audio (to switch between Bluetooth, speaker, etc.), and Raise (your hand).” Users can tap “Turn off On-the-Go” to switch back to the standard interface.

In the meantime, details about the launch date or if the feature will even be launched are limited at the moment. Also, there is no official announcement by the company yet.

Google Meet played a vital role during the pandemic by providing a reliable, scalable, and integrated solution for remote communication and collaboration. Its features and functionalities helped businesses, educational institutions, and individuals adapt to the new normal, ensuring connectivity and productivity despite physical limitations.
