Google is reportedly working to develop its in-house version of location monitoring tag that could compete with established products like Apple’s AirTags. According to a developer and leaker Kuba Wojciechowski, the American multinational tech giant is making its own first-party tracker that is codenamed ‘grogu.’
There is no official confirmation from the company and details about the same are still vague. However, Android expert Mishaal Rahman Tweeted that the Google tracker would use the fast pair feature and will be identified as a ‘locator tag.’
The concept of Bluetooth trackers, which are quite helpful in locating the attached products in case of loss, is not new. Companies like Samsung and Tile have been making them for some time now. Even though Google is late to enter the segment, it is expected that its smart tracker could give competition to the existing players.
Like Apple AirTag and Samsung’s SmartTag, Grogu is also expected to work on a distributed tracking network, according to a report by SamMobile. The Sundar Pichai-headed company could rename the distributed tracking network as the ‘Finder Network,’ the report added.
The device, built by Google’s Nest team, will likely support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. Further, the tracker will reportedly have a small internal speaker for sounding alerts. The device is expected to be unveiled at the Google I/O Developer Conference in May 2023 in various colors.
