Meta AI arrives in India for WhatsApp, Facebook, and others

Meta AI India

Meta has officially launched its AI assistant, Meta AI, in India. The tool, powered by the company’s latest large language model Llama 3, is integrated with WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

“It’s (Meta AI) starting to roll out in India in English. You can use Meta AI on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram to get things done, learn, create and connect with the things that matter to you,” Mark Zuckerberg-led company said in a blog.

Users can access Meta AI directly through the apps they already use by updating to the latest versions of WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Users can look for the blue-purple circle in the search box of the updated Meta apps. For those who prefer a traditional interface, Meta AI is also accessible via the meta.ai website. If you do not want to use Meta AI, each platform offers options to disable the chatbot within its settings.

Similar to other AI chatbots, Meta AI also offers users text-based interactions and image generation tools. On WhatsApp, Meta AI can assist users with a variety of tasks such as planning trips, providing recommendations, and even creating content like WhatsApp stickers. Meanwhile, on Facebook, the AI integrates into the feed, allowing users to obtain additional insights and information related to posts they encounter.

The AI chatbot was previously unveiled during Meta Connect 2023 in September in beta in the United States and has expanded to several other countries as well as in languages since then. I asked Meta.ai about its availability and, apart from India and U.S., it named the following countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom.

Back to India, the roll out seems to be still under motion in as I was able to use the feature on Instagram but not on the other Meta-owned social media platforms. For now, I along with those who cannot access the feature, we could just wait and expect for the rollout to reach all gradually.
