Launched in 2018 as an alternative to Twitter, Parler marketed itself as a free speech network and gained popularity with the U.S. conservatives.
Parler, an American microblogging and social media platform, returned to Google Play Store on Friday after it was removed in January 2021 on allegations of inciting violence at the U.S. Capitol.
A spokesperson from Google said that the app has taken several measures to improve its content moderation, while monitoring and removing posts that incite violence and are abusive. Paler has made substantial modifications to comply with Google’s policies, the official added.
Launched in 2018 as an alternative to Twitter, Parler marketed itself as a free speech network and gained popularity with the U.S. conservatives and traction from the supporters of Donald Trump, a former U.S. President. It was removed from app stores of both Google and Apple amid allegations of fueling the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots wherein a mob of Trump supporters attacked the U.S. government’s legislative branch after his defeat in the 2020 Presidential elections.
The app was reinstated in iOS in May last year, while Android users were able to download a version of Parler from the company’s website. However, the app remained absent from Google Play Store until now.
