Since 2014, Tesla has invested $6.2 billion in Nevada.
American electric vehicle maker Tesla on Tuesday announced to invest over $3.6 billion in its Gigafactory in Nevada. The Elon Musk-owned company will also add 3,000 new employees to the facility.
The company will build two new production facilities in the state. First, a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory that is said to have sufficient capacity to produce batteries for 1.5 million light-duty vehicles annually. Second, a “first high-volume” Semi factory that is Tesla’s electric truck facility.
The automaker, however, did not mention the quantum of trucks it will make on a daily basis. Also, it is still unclear at the moment when the facility will open.
Since 2014, the company has invested $6.2 billion in Nevada and built a 5.4 million square foot Gigafactory. Tesla said that to date it has produced 7.3 billion battery cells, 1.5 million battery packs, 3.6 million drive units, and one million energy modules at Gigafactory Nevada.
After a long wait, the company delivered the first batch of heavy-duty its Semi trucks to PepsiCo in December last year. In December 2017, when Semi was first revealed, Pepsi ordered 100 trucks from the automaker. Tesla then estimated the shipping in 2019. However, due to delays, some because of the pandemic and supply chain problems, the shipment got postponed to 2021 and later pushed to 2022.
