Xiaomi has launched its 14 series smartphones, comprising of Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro, being the first to utilize the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The debut occurred exclusively in China, showcasing the technology that’s expected to set the trend in 2024.

The Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro smartphones feature an AI-heavy set and the introduction of a new Android skin, HyperOS. The series is set to utilize the on-device AI foundation models, a feature of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, to enable functionalities ranging from summarizing web content to generating AI portraits, placing users in diverse global scenes.

The Xiaomi 14 model has a 6.3-inch LTPO display with a flat screen and narrow bezels, with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and adaptive refresh rates between 1-120Hz. Conversely, the 14 Pro model, with its 6.7-inch display, maintains a flat screen but incorporates a design where bezels curve around the edges and corners, differing from its predecessor, the 13 Pro.

Both models share a similar overall flat design on the back and sides, veering away from the curves the 13 Pro had. With up to 16GB RAM and 1TB of internal storage, these smartphones are designed to handle intensive tasks. The pricing starts at CNY 3,999 ( roughly around Rs 50,000) for Xiaomi 14 and CNY 4,999 ( roughly around Rs 56,000)  for the 14 Pro.

A notable feature is the 14 Pro’s triple rear camera setup tuned by Leica, with a 50MP main camera alongside a 50MP ultra-wide and a 50MP telephoto lens. This model also introduces a haptic feedback engine developed in collaboration with Tsinghua University and a 1016 CyberEngine motor. The availability of multiple color options and a Titanium Special Edition adds variety to the offering.

The 14 Pro model comes with a 2K display resolution, variable refresh rate up to 120Hz, and a 4880mAh battery supporting 120W wired fast charging, as well as 50W wireless charging. The phone also features an in-display fingerprint sensor, infrared sensor, and Dolby Atmos-tuned stereo speakers.

These smartphones mark Xiaomi’s move to be part of the AI phone feature trend in 2024, blending practical elements with new technology, in the premium smartphone segment. As the global release, excluding the US, is anticipated, tech enthusiasts worldwide are awaiting to experience the blend of AI, generative technology, and hardware the Xiaomi 14 series offers.

As the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to be part of many more devices in the near future, the Xiaomi 14 series sets a precedent, exploring the capabilities of smartphones. The pre-order for these devices is now open, marking a step towards technological innovation by Xiaomi.
