Golden Globes secure 5-year deal with CBS, Paramount+

The Golden Globes Awards last week announced it has secured a five-year broadcast deal with CBS and live streaming of the show on Paramount+. This announcement comes after a tumultuous period for the award show, marked by controversy and a ratings slump.

The partnership kicks off with the 82nd Golden Globes in January 2025. This move follows CBS’ successful broadcast of the 81st ceremony in January 2024, which garnered a significant viewership boost of nearly 50% compared to the previous year. It was also a hit on Paramount+, ranking as the third-largest live-streamed event on the platform.

“CBS’ collaboration with the Globes for this year’s broadcast was a big win for both of us and established strong momentum for awards shows in 2024,” said CBS President and Chief Executive Officer George Cheeks. “The Globes is a one-of a-kind live event that adds another marquee special and valuable promotional platform to CBS’ annual calendar, Cheeks added.

The Golden Globe Awards, also known as Hollywood’s “Biggest Party of the Year,” is a prestigious ceremony honoring excellence in both film and television. Produced by Dick Clark Productions, the show boasts a global audience in over 185 countries.

This new deal signifies a period of stability for the Golden Globes. After facing criticism and a boycott due to a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization underwent significant reforms. Now, with a new broadcast partner and a renewed focus on inclusivity, the Golden Globes are poised for a successful future.

“CBS stepped up for the Globes during a very challenging time, and inherently understood its value, while having the foresight, imagination and conviction to bring this iconic show to its many platforms,” said Jay Penske, chairman-CEO of Penske Media and Dick Clark Productions.

Meanwhile, the 81st Golden Globe Awards were held in January this year in Los Angeles, California. “Oppenheimer” won the Best Motion Picture (Drama) honor, the biggest award of the night. Cillian Murphy won the Best Male Actor Award for his role in Oppenheimer, while the Best Director trophy was granted to Christopher Nolan. Emma Stone claimed the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for playing Bella Baxter in ‘Poor Things.’
