Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 24) unveiled a swathe of software updates for its entire device ecosystem on June 10th, 2024. iPhone users have a lot to look forward to with iOS 18. The update brings a much-desired level of customization to the home screen. Users can now arrange apps and widgets freely around wallpapers,creating a truly personalized layout. Not just the Home Screen but the Control Center can be customised too! Yes, the tiles can now be resized, moved and there are more categories to swipe from in the Control Center. The Lock Screen shortcuts can be customised as well. Communication also gets an upgrade with Messages. Scheduled messaging allows for more deliberate communication, while text effects like jitter and shake add a touch of fun. Notably, iPhone 14 and later models will gain satellite messaging support, potentially enhancing emergency communication capabilities.
iPadOS 18 (iPad gets a Calculator, finally)
After years of waiting, iPad users can finally rejoice. iPadOS 18 brings a dedicated Calculator app, complete with Apple Pencil support. iPadOS 18 introduces Math Notes, an innovative feature that allows users to write down math problems on the screen using the Apple Pencil, which the app then solves in the same handwriting. Even the Pages and Notes app support this feature as it is a perfect example of hardware and software working together seamlessly. The Game Mode enhances the playability and the icons can be customised just like the iOS 18 update. Screen sharing with SharePlay goes to another level as both iPhones and iPads can be controlled through MacBook while screen sharing directly from Mac itself, without having to keep using the phone to present.

Apple Watch takes a step towards becoming a more holistic health and convenience device with watchOS 11. The new Vitals app offers a quick and easy way to view key health metrics like heart rate. The Check In feature adds a layer of safety and peace of mind, allowing users to notify loved ones when they’ve arrived at a destination. Apple TV users can expect a more streamlined and engaging experience with tvOS 18. Insight, a new feature, displays real-time information about actors and songs during Apple Original shows.This integration adds another layer of depth and interactivity to the viewing experience. Notably, dialogue enhancement and improved subtitle options aim to make content more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Additionally, Snoopy enters into your Apple TV when idle in the form of an animated screensaver.
macOS Sequoia Streamlines Workflows
Mac users will benefit from increased productivity and organization with macOS Sequoia (version 15). iPhone mirroring allows users to control their iPhones directly from their Mac computers,eliminating the need to constantly switch between devices. Automatic window tiling ensures a more efficient use of screen space, while Safari updates with highlights and a viewer mode for on-page video content enhance the browsing experience. Thats not all, as iOS notifications can now be seen on macOS, inlcuding the Game Porting Toolkit 2 that developers can use to port macOS games onto the iPad since both the devices feature the M2 and M3 chip lineup.
VisionOS 2 Pushes the Boundaries of Mixed Reality
The software powering Apple’s mixed-reality headset, Apple Vision Pro ,received a significant update with VisionOS 2. This update introduces Spatial Photos, a feature that allows users to transform 2D images into 3D spatial experiences. Imagine creating a 3D photo from a favorite vacation memory and then sharing it with friends and family using SharePlay – a glimpse into the immersive possibilities of mixed reality.
