The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the Geländewagen, has long been a symbol of luxury and off-road prowess. Now, the iconic SUV is taking a step into the future with the introduction of the G580 with EQ Technology, an electric version that promises to enhance the G-Class’s capabilities while maintaining its classic design.

A Familiar Face with Electric Underpinnings

Unlike Mercedes’ dedicated EQ line of electric vehicles, the G580 retains the styling of its gasoline-powered counterparts. The only noticeable differences are a raised hood, flared wheel arches with integrated air curtains, and a charging port. Underneath the familiar exterior, however, lies a modified ladder frame that has been adapted to accommodate a battery pack and electric motors.

Quad-Motor Power and Simulated Differentials

The G580 is equipped with a quad-motor powertrain, delivering an impressive 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. This allows the electric G-Class to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, according to Mercedes’ estimates, with a top speed electronically limited to 112 mph.

The use of an electric motor for each wheel eliminates the need for the mechanical locking front, center, and rear differentials found in gasoline-powered G-Class models. Instead, the G580 simulates locked differentials by automatically metering the torque delivered to each wheel. Each motor is also paired with its own transmission, featuring a low-range reduction gear that mimics the effect of a traditional transfer case.

Off-Road Capability Enhanced by Electric Power

Despite the addition of a 116-kilowatt-hour battery pack housed under the floor (and protected by a lightweight mixed-material skid plate), the G580 boasts an impressive 9.8 inches of ground clearance. It can also ford up to 33.5 inches of water, surpassing the capabilities of its gasoline-powered siblings. The electric G-Class features a 32.0-degree approach angle, 30.7-degree departure angle, and 20.3-degree breakover angle, further emphasizing its off-road prowess.

The quad-motor powertrain enables several innovative features, such as G-Turn, which allows the G-Class to turn in place like a tank (limited to two rotations at a time), and G-Steering, which applies torque to individual wheels to improve turning radius off-road. An intelligent crawl function maintains a preset speed over loose surfaces. To compensate for the lack of a combustion engine’s sound, Mercedes has developed an artificial soundtrack called G-Roar.

Charging and Range

While Mercedes has not yet discussed the G580’s range, the SUV supports 200-kilowatt DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in a claimed 32 minutes. An 11-kW AC onboard charger is also included, capable of fully recharging the pack in 13.5 hours. The G580 features the same variable regenerative braking system seen in other Mercedes EVs and plug-in hybrids, allowing the driver to select the level of regeneration using steering wheel paddles.

Luxurious Interior and Advanced Technology

Inside, the G580 offers the same luxurious accommodations as other G-Class models, including Nappa leather upholstery. The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system is carried over, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen. A 360-degree camera system enables a “transparent hood” function, displaying the terrain directly beneath the front of the vehicle to aid in off-road navigation.

Pricing and Competition

The G580 with EQ Technology will launch in the U.S. as an Edition One model, featuring special paint options and unique exterior and interior trim details. While Mercedes has not disclosed pricing information, the G-Class has never been an inexpensive vehicle. The G580 will compete with other high-end electric off-roaders, such as the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Rivian R1S, with electric Jeep and Land Rover models expected to join the fray soon.

As the automotive industry continues to embrace electrification, the Mercedes G580 represents a significant step forward for the iconic G-Class, combining its legendary off-road capabilities with the benefits of an electric powertrain. This move not only showcases Mercedes’ commitment to electrification but also highlights the growing trend of high-performance electric off-road vehicles in the luxury segment.
