Amazon developing a standalone app for sports content, report says
Amazon launched Prime Gaming in India just a few days back.

U.S. multinational tech giant Amazon is working on developing a standalone app for watching sports content, according to a report by The Information. Currently, sports content is included in Amazon’s Prime Video OTT platform.

However, it is still unclear as to when the company will launch the app or whether it will even proceed with the effort. According to a Reuters report, the company already owns streaming rights to games like “National Football League’s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK.”

The news of Amazon’s standalone sports app comes amid the company’s ambitions to double down on its streaming business. The company’s chief executive officer Andy Jassy recently called live sports “a unique asset” that it will continue to invest in even as the tech giant is trimming its costs in other areas of its business.

An expected recession next year has led many companies to cut down their cost by laying off several employees and shutting down some of their businesses. In November, Amazon was reported to let go of around 10,000 employees in phases in its largest job cut ever.

Last month, reports also suggested that the company is closing its wholesale distribution business in India to focus on its core business amid the global economic slowdown. The news came after the company announced that it will shut down its edtech platform and food delivery business in the country.

Despite this, Amazon launched Prime Gaming in India just a few days back. The service will provide members with free access to various games every month.
