Colin Farrell returns as the notorious Oswald Cobblepot in “The Penguin,” a new limited series set in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. This spin-off from “The Batman” (2022) follows Cobblepot’s rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone. Developed by Lauren LeFranc and produced by Warner Bros. Television, the eight-episode series is slated for a fall 2024 release on Max. Cristin Milioti joins Farrell in the cast. Although specific plot details remain under wraps, here is what you need to know.
Lauren LeFranc takes the helm as both writer and showrunner for the Penguin series. She’ll be joined by a powerhouse executive producing team, including The Batman director Matt Reeves, producer Dylan Clark, and even the series’ star, Colin Farrell. While Reeves won’t be directing initial episodes, Craig Zobel steps up to lead the way for the early episodes.
The Penguin Storyline
This new mini series touted to be a “new chapter in the Batman Saga” delves into the rise of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot (a.k.a. The Penguin) in Gotham’s criminal underworld. Picking up after the events of the 2022 film, the series explores the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone’s demise. Colin Farrell reprises his role, navigating a flooded Gotham City in the eight-episode Max series arriving this fall. In terms of plot details we may expect a power struggle in Gotham city as Cobblepot (also called “Oz”) fights for his place in the city’s underworld. We can expect a story much similar to 1983’s Scarface that starred Al Pacino and was filled with violence and ambition. Producer Dylan Clark emphasizes the series is a standalone experience and serves as an intergral part for The Batman Part II that is slated for 2026.
Cast of The Penguin
Colin Farrell reprises his role from The Batman, leading the upcoming Penguin series. Joining him is Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, the show’s leading lady. The cast is stacked with talent, that includes Michael Kelly and Shohreh Aghdashloo.
New faces like Deirdre O’Connell and Rhenzy Feliz add to the intrigue. Notably, the latest addition to the team is Clancy Brown, stepping into the shoes of the ruthless Salvatore Maroni.
In the comics, Maroni’s actions caused the horrific transformation of Harvey Dent into Two-Face. Could this be a hint at the iconic villain’s arrival in The Batman universe? Only time will tell, but it’s an exciting possibility.
