Indian fintech giant PhonePe unveiled the Indus Appstore, an Android app store, in January. Positioned as a native alternative, it seeks to challenge Google Play Store’s dominance in the Indian app domain. Boasting a staggering array of over 200,000 apps across more than 45 categories, Indus has made an undeniable impact on the scene. Here’s what we know about this Indian app platform.

Indus App Store – For India, by India

Indus App Store supports 12 regional languages and already has over 200000 apps spanning over 45 categories

A major highlight of Indus is that, unlike Google, which typically takes a percentage from in-app purchases, Indus allows developers to use third-party payment gateways free of charge for an entire year. No wonder this Play Store alternative is emerging as a highly attractive proposition for Desi developers.

In addition, several key factors are driving its success, with over 100,000 downloads according to PhonePe. Another key aspect is the role of localization. Indus App Store distinguishes itself with its tailored features, boasting support for 12 regional languages and a clear preference for Indian apps showcased prominently on its homepage.

Additionally the app features short-form videos on the discovery page that looks similar to that of Instagram, with a visually engaging carousel allowing seamless browsing of apps and games. Notably just like WhatsApp, users can conveniently sign in using only their mobile number, unlike the use of Gmail ID for Google’s Play store account.

Nevertheless, to truly challenge Google Play’s overwhelming dominance, which still commands over 95% of the market share in India, Indus must swiftly secure preloaded agreements with leading smartphone giants such as Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and others. Presently, its partnerships with smaller players like Nokia and Indian phone manufacturer Lava, each holding less than 3% market share, may not suffice to propel it to the forefront of the competition.

The Indus App Store is now within reach for all Indians as users can simply visit the website indusappstore.com to download the APK file. Before installing, you would need to allow installations from unknown sources on your Android device. Once installed, sign up using your mobile number and start exploring.

From there, you can browse the app’s wide variety of apps or search for specific ones. When you find an app you want, just tap the download button. Users will still need to enable unknown app installations one more time for the Indus App Store, once an app is installed from the platform. Apps can easily be uninstalled if you don’t need anymore from the store too.
