Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will enable users to share status updates not only from their primary smartphones but also from the web interface and companion devices.

The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo, a reliable feature tracker, in the latest beta version of WhatsApp Web (2.2353.59). Users can now easily upload status updates by clicking on a green icon adjacent to their profile photo in the Status section, choosing between photos, videos, or text formats for their updates.

Previously, the ability to post ephemeral status updates – a popular feature allowing users to share photos, videos, and texts that disappear after 24 hours – was restricted to the primary device on which a user’s WhatsApp account was activated. However, recent updates indicate a major expansion of this capability. Users who have opted to participate in the beta testing of WhatsApp Web and the Android version of WhatsApp are now the first to experience this extended functionality.

The expansion of status update sharing to companion devices is particularly noteworthy. This feature, initially available in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.1.4, marks a significant step in making the platform’s suite of features more accessible across multiple devices. Users can now maintain their online presence and share moments seamlessly, whether they are using their primary smartphone, a secondary device, or accessing WhatsApp through a web browser.

This move by WhatsApp not only enhances user experience but also positions the platform to remain a dominant player in the competitive world of instant messaging. As the feature rolls out to a broader audience, including anticipated support for iOS devices, the company continues to solidify its place as a versatile and user-centric messaging solution in our increasingly interconnected digital world.
