Xiaomi unveils new wireless AR smart glasses

At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Xiaomi introduced its new prototype Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition.

The AR glasses weigh just 126 grams. It comes with a “retina-level” display and microLED screens with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. Xiaomi has used electrochromic lenses in order to adjust viewing in different light conditions. The company says that the glasses have a complete blackout mode for a fully immersive experience, somewhat like a VR headset.

The Chinese phone maker’s new AR  glasses are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR 2 Gen 1 platform with support for the Snapdragon Spaces XR development platform to run different applications. The same chip is also used by the Meta Quest Pro.

The AR glasses are wireless. To use the device, your smartphone should be a Xiaomi 13 series phone or any smartphone that is Snapdragon Spaces-ready. The device is using the company’s own communication link to achieve full link latency as low as 50ms.

You can control the device using gestures and move around the interface. For example, using gestures, you can “grab” a screencast from the TV to your glasses. Xiaomi says that with the help of Mi Share’s application streaming capability, the AR glasses can let viewers watch content through apps like TikTok and YouTube. However, it should be noted that the AR glasses are just a prototype, as of now.

Not only Xiaomi, but even Oppo is also showcasing its Air Glasses 2 at MWC. The device was launched in China last year.  As per reports, Apple could also unveil its mixed reality headset at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June.

Other than the AR glasses, Xiaomi has also launched the new Xiaomi 13 Pro with a 1-inch camera sensor along with the 13 and the 13 lite. The company also announced the new Xiaomi Buds 4 Pro, Xiaomi Watch S1 Pro, and Xiaomi Electric Scooter 4.
