Yahoo Mail introduces new ‘Shopping Saver’ tool, other AI capabilities
Yahoo Mail’s existing features such as Search, Writing Assistant, and Message Summary have also been upgraded.

American multinational technology major Yahoo announced on Monday a new shopping feature – Shopping Saver along with other artificial intelligence enhancements for its email service, Yahoo Mail. The latest enhancements aim to save “time and money” of Yahoo users and redefine their experience, the company said.

Talking about the Shopping Saver tool, it surfaces gift cards, discount codes, and store credits that people may have forgotten about in their inboxes. In addition, the latest tool, unique to Yahoo Mail, drafts suggested messages to vendors to help apply those savings after a purchase has been made. The company pointed out that nearly half of the adults in the United States have at least one unused gift card, gift voucher, or store credit. The Shopping Saver tool will help users to cash in on their inbox.

“We’ve introduced a full suite of tools on Yahoo Mail to help users save time and money, making strides toward an assistive inbox,” said Josh Jacobson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo Mail. “In total, US consumers have $23 billion in unused gift cards and credits, and we hope our new tools will help users gain a fraction of that back in their wallets,’ Jacobson added.

Yahoo Mail’s existing features such as Search, Writing Assistant, and Message Summary have also been upgraded. As for the Search bar, it now suggests common questions to help users find what they’re looking for. Meaning, that users do not have to rely solely on keywords or dig through old emails and rather they can simply ask a question, or select from a list of prompted queries relevant to their search terms. For example, “How much did I spend on groceries last week?” In addition, there are new filters (e.g. From, To, Date) to help users further narrow search results.

Yahoo has upgraded the Writing Assistant tool that can now draft suggested replies in the voice of the user and also identify appropriate tones via context clues from existing email chains. The upgrade has expanded the tones of the Writing Assistant from two options previously to an unlimited offering. Lastly, the Message Summary tool has been enhanced to highlight key information about messages like dates, times, and action items. It then suggests tasks, calendar events, and follow-up topics.

The latest generative AI enhancements are developed using Google Cloud’s AI technology and opened to testing with iOS users earlier this year. Yahoo, which is preparing for a public release of the features, says now the beta expands on web browsers as well.
