Apple MacBooks to get touchscreen by 2025, report says

The touchscreen Macs are expected to use macOS initially.

Despite years of resistance, American consumer tech giant Apple is reportedly working on adding touchscreen to its Mac computers, according to a Bloomberg report. Apple’s first touchscreen laptop is expected to launch in 2025 as a part of an update to the MacBook Pro, the report added.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, engineers at Apple are actively engaged in the project. This hints that the iPhone maker is “seriously considering producing touch-screen Macs for the first time.”

As a part of the upgrade, Apple is also planning to move its displays to OLED technology from the current LCD/LED displays for its computers. Gurman added that OLED screens, which offer improved brightness and color, will also come to the iPad Pro in the first half of 2024.

Furthermore, the touchscreen laptops are expected to use macOS as Apple is not actively working to combine the operating systems of iPad and Mac. The revamped device would retain a traditional laptop design with a trackpad and a keyboard but its screen would support touch input and gestures like an iPhone or iPad.

For a long time, Apple has argued against adding a touchscreen to its laptops, worrying that it could hamper its iPad sales. This is even as most of its major competitors in the laptop market including Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. have added a touchscreen to their computers.

However, since Apple computers are comparatively a better revenue-generating product than the iPad and amid stiff competition in the segment, it makes sense for the company to give up its long-standing notion and add touchscreens to its laptops. More details about the touchscreen device or its launch are not yet clear, and there has been no official confirmation by Apple yet.
