Apple acquired Dark Sky in March 2020.
Apple has permanently closed its popular weather app Dark Sky. The app was removed from App Store in September 2022 and has now stopped functioning for existing users.
It was previously announced that the Dark Sky iOS app would not be available beginning December 31st, 2022. The American multinational tech giant will further shut down Dark Sky’s application programming interface for third-party weather apps and its website on March 31.
“We are no longer accepting new signups for the Dark Sky API, which has been replaced by Apple’s WeatherKit,” Dark Sky’s website read.
The company acquired Dark Sky in March 2020 and has since integrated most of its features into its own Weather app. The tech giant wrote in a blog on how Dark Sky users can use the Apple Weather app. “Dark Sky’s features have been integrated into Apple Weather,” the tech giant wrote.
The tech giant’s Weather app offers hyperlocal forecasts for your current location, meaning they are precise down to 0.001° of latitude and longitude. The app offers next-hour precipitation forecasts, hourly forecasts for the next 10 days, high-resolution radar, and notifications.
“Apple Weather provides a variety of overlays, including precipitation, air quality, and temperature. While precipitation and temperature overlays are available globally, high-resolution next-hour precipitation and air quality are limited to certain countries and regions,” the tech giant noted.
The iPhone maker further added that the Weather app is available on devices running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 Ventura.
