WhatsApp Pay India chief Vinay Choletti resigns within four months of taking charge

Choletti assumed the responsibility of WhatsApp Pay in the country in September.

WhatsApp Pay India head Vinay Choletti has resigned from the firm within four months into the role. This departure adds to the series of senior-level exodus from Meta-owned organizations.

“Today was my last day at WhatsApp Pay and as I sign off, I can proudly say that watching the scale and the influence of WhatsApp in India has been a humbling experience,” Choletti wrote on LinkedIn yesterday.

“As I move on to my next adventure, I strongly believe that WhatsApp has the power to phenomenally transform digital payments and financial inclusion in India and I look forward to seeing it leverage its potential in the coming years,” he added.

Choletti assumed the responsibility of WhatsApp Pay in the country in September after the departure of Manesh Mahatme, who resigned to join Amazon. Choletti worked at Amazon for seven years before joining WhatsApp Pay in 2021.

Last month, now-former Meta India head Ajit Mohan also stepped down from his position after four years to join rival company Snap Inc. In the following weeks, Meta India Public Policy lead Rajiv Aggarwal and head of WhatsApp Abhijit Bose also resigned.

In the same month, Meta announced to fire more than 11,000 employees, or almost 13% of its workforce, in its biggest round of layoffs ever. The parent of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp further announced that it has frozen new hiring. However, a Meta spokesperson said at the time that top-level exits were unrelated to the layoffs.
