Tesla initiates recall for over 125,000 vehicles to address seat belt warning system issue
Tesla is recalling 125,227 vehicles in the US due to a malfunction in their seat belt warning system. This issue can increase the risk of injury in a collision, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects a wide range of Tesla models, including Model S (2012-2024), Model X (2015-2024), Model 3 (2017-2023), and Model Y (2020-2023). The problem lies in the seat belt warning system potentially failing to activate the chime and light reminder when the driver is unbuckled. This is a violation of federal safety regulations.
Thankfully, the electric vehicle maker will address the issue with a free over-the-air (OTA) software update expected to roll out in June. The update will eliminate the system’s dependence on the driver seat occupancy sensor and instead rely solely on the driver’s seat belt buckle and ignition status to trigger the seat belt reminder.
This is not the first time Tesla has faced recalls in 2024. They previously recalled vehicles for software glitches affecting visibility while reversing and a potential issue with the accelerator pedal in Cybertrucks. Additionally, the NHTSA is investigating the adequacy of Tesla’s December 2023 recall of over 2 million vehicles to address Autopilot safety concerns following a series of crashes.
