While still in the realm of fiction, Roblox has created a functional prototype for online gaming: an AI translator allowing its international community of players to seamlessly communicate during gameplay by bridging language divides.

Unveiled Monday, Roblox’s real-time chat translation feature represents an innovative milestone toward enabling technology-assisted understanding between people speaking different tongues. The capability was built in-house by Roblox’s engineering team leveraging cutting-edge machine learning. It uses natural language processing to translate conversations bidirectionally among 16 languages with minimal lag.
